Manchester city centre's weekend of chaos: Two deaths, an armed siege and 'stupidly busy' Christmas markets

Manchester is taking stock today after a tragic and chaotic weekend in the city centre. Over the course of just 72 hours, Greater Manchester Police dealt with two deaths, an armed siege and huge numbers of visitors to the Christmas Markets.

The force also had numerous incidents elsewhere in the region including an incident that also required armed police in Heywood and a bomb scare in Rochdale.

Sergeant Jon Kenna, from the city centre team, tweeted last night: "Bravo to the team this weekend. "Relentless demand, a murder, a fatal fail to stop, along with all the other daily demands and commitments. "The team just cracked on and got on with it.
