A man has been handed a jail sentence of 26 weeks after he was found guilty of two animal welfare offences. Jamie Graham, aged 25, was caught on camera by a worried neighbour attacking his pooch Blue.

Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard how Graham was spotted beating up his golden labrador-cross with a mallet in the backyard of his home on October 8 last year, Chronicle Live reports.Graham claimed that he was punishing the creature for biting someone else.However, magistrates' were told that this was not supported by any complaint and was contradictory to the dog's good disposition.He was handed a jail sentence, a lifetime ban on keeping all animals and ordered to pay £250 costs and a £128 victim surcharge when he appeared before the court
