New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has said he believes Liz Truss will still be Prime Minister at Christmas - despite five Tory MPs already publicly calling for her to step down.
Earlier, Sir Charles Walker became the fifth Conservative MP to call for Ms Truss to go. He described her position as "untenable" and said that "she has put colleagues, the country, through a huge amount of unnecessary pain and upset and worry." Amid the rebellion, Mr Hunt called on fellow Conservative MPs to "give her a chance" and ruled out becoming PM himself, during an interview on Sky News. "I rule it out, Mrs Hunt rules it out, three Hunt children rule it out," he said. HAVE YOUR SAY : Should there be a general election?
Mr Hunt replaced Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor on Friday (October 14) and has since ripped up the bulk of the economic strategy that brought Liz Truss into office just six weeks ago.
During an appearance on Channel 4 News, Mr Hunt conceded he had little to say which could soothe the nerves of worried voters.
