Lanarkshire's poorest people hit hard by reductions in benefits

iOS - Android National figures showed that more than 200,000 households across Scotland are seeing their benefits reduced by an average of £75-a-month due to the way Universal Credit payments are made.The month of February the figures showed that Rutherglen and Hamilton West saw 5400 households lose £399,000 in repayments , the third highest in Scotland.

Motherwell and Wishaw was the fourth worst in the country, with 5100 households seeing £393,000 deducted.In total, almost £15 million was claimed back by the DWP in that month across Scotland.A total of £7.25 million from that figure is being deducted to repay so-called “advance payments”.These are upfront loans people need to take out to bridge the five-week wait for their first full.
