James Bulger's mum Denise Fergus reveals why his birthday will be extra special this year

When two-year-old James Bulger was killed in February 1993, it was a crime that affected the nation. In a few weeks, his mother Denise Fergus and her family will mark a milestone birthday.

With the boys who killed him never seeing the inside of an adult jail, Denise feels cheated of justice. But James' birthday this year on March 16 will not be a moment of sadness - but one with a positive legacy.

The youngster was two when he was abducted and murdered by two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, in Bootle, Merseyside.

They served eight years in children’s secure units - Venables was sent to the Red Bank Home in Merseyside while Thompson was housed in Barton Moss Secure Care Centre in Manchester.
