Huge bang heard across Salford and city centre earlier today - this is what caused it

A loud bang was heard across Salford and parts of Manchester city centre this morning. Dozens of people reported hearing a loud bang just before midday today at around 11.54am.

Metal recycling firm Bennett Bros confirmed the noise came from their scrap yard. Staff at the firm, in Cornbrook Road, Stretford, said a lorry had reversed over a piece of scrap metal and burst its tyre.
