Greggs has shelved its plans to begin reopening its stores, in news that will devastate fans of the pastry chain. Earlier this week, Greggs had announced it would open some stores on a trial basis, to make sure they could operate safely for staff and customers.

The brand shut up shop completely when the UK went into lockdown, despite takeaway services being allowed to continue operating.

All 2,050 outlets have been closed since the end of March. The trial was supposed to be taking place in the Newcastle area, with around 20 shops trialling operating with social distancing measures in place.

If the trial had been successful, it was hoped that Greggs across the country - including Greater Manchester - would be able to reopen too.
