John Hopewell Chief International CorrespondentFremantle has sold out most major territories worldwide on the Martin Freeman-led BBC One smash hit “The Responder,” consolidating the acclaimed crime drama’s contention, even at this early stage, to become one of Europe’s top series of 2022.

Banner deals take in France (Canal Plus), Italy (Disney Plus), Germany’s (Magenta TV). Spain (Movistar Plus) and Russia & CIS (Viasat), all leading pay/SVOD operators.

The sales come as Fremantle, thanks to “The Responder,” “Cross Fire,” Domino Day,” “Suspect” and “This Sceptred Isle” looks set to see an unprecedented five U.K.

premium dramas finishing production in 2022. Led by “Barons” and “Fellow Travellers,” its English-language sales lineup for 2023 looks equally bullish.

Neil Diamond has joined the list of musicians who have made to sell their music catalogs, signing multi-million dollar music contracts over the last year, including Bruce Springsteen, Shakira, Stevie Nicks, and more.And while this seems to be the first time that the financial terms of the deal are kept private, it was announced that Diamond’s recording rights and his entire song catalog were officially sold to Universal Music Group.The deal includes rights to all recordings from the singer’s career, which lists 110 unreleased tracks, archival videos and an entire unreleased album. This means that Universal has control over his music, and can even release future songs or albums if the 81-year-old artist works in more music.Diamond’s music has been used in different movies and films, including ‘Friends,’ The Simpsons’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ and many of his most iconic tracks have become hits with the help of other artists, who have cover versions of his songs, such as ‘Sweet Caroline,’ ‘Red Red Wine’ and ‘I’m a Believer,’ among others.’The successful artist retired in 2018, announcing he had Parkinson’s disease.

AAFCA Plans for Revitalized In-Person Awards Ceremony
Angelique Jackson For the first time in two years, the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) will present their annual award ceremony honoring the best in film as an in-person event, after pivoting to a virtual production amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The 13th AAFCA Awards will be held on March 2 at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles, with a limited capacity audience and other health and safety protocols in place.  “It’s exciting and it’s a little nerve-wracking because, with COVID, it’s a day-to-day thing in terms of the transmission rates and the number of diagnoses,” AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson tells Variety. “But we’re hopeful, prayerful and confident that the numbers will remain at an acceptable level to allow us to present a very nice and classy show.”   Ultimately, it’s a return to form for the organization, established in 2003 with the mission to amplify Black voices in film criticism and arts and entertainment journalism from across the African Diaspora.
