Forrest Gump author Winston Groom dies aged 77

Tributes have been paid to Forrest Gump author Winston Groom, who has died aged 77. His novel about a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama was adapted into a 1994 blockbuster film starring Tom Hanks in the lead role.

Forrest Gump was a cultural sensation and grossed more than 683 million dollars (about £527 million) at the global box office on its way to winning six Academy Awards, including best picture and best actor for Hanks.

Groom’s death was confirmed by Alabama governor Kay Ivey. “Saddened to learn that Alabama has lost one of our most gifted writers,” she said. “While he will be remembered for creating Forrest Gump, Winston Groom was a talented journalist & noted author of American history.
