Celtic boss John Barnes has claimed black football managers are given less time to succeed in a passionate address on racism in society.
The 56-year-old Liverpool and England legend opened up on his struggles in spells in charge at Parkhead and then Tranmere as he called for bigots to “own up” to their bias.
Barnes was sacked in 2000 after just eight months at Celtic but accepts that was down to expectations and poor form rather than racism.However he was less convinced that his dismissal at Prenton Park nine years later wasn’t down to a deep-lying bias against black bosses.
Barnes’ comments came on the back of Manchester City star Raheem Sterling’s call for English football to address its lack of black representation in positions of power..
