The first Briton to contract coronavirus has described how he was "hit like a train" by the illness, which left him feeling as if he was "suffocating" and in "blinding pain" for weeks.

Connor Reed, 25, an ex-pat living in Wuhan who works at a school, thought he had a cold when he became ill on November 25, the Mirror reports.

But it took a month for officials in China to declare the outbreak of the virus and during that time period, Connor became very poorly.

He says he tried to cure himself by drinking a hot toddy of whisky and lemon. After seven days of feeling poorly, his symptoms dramatically worsened and he took time off the school where he had worked for seven months. "This is no longer just a cold.
