Three fire engines were scrambled to the scene on Wellington Street at 5pm. The fire involved the bedroom of the flat. There have been no reported injuries.
Fire crews from Gorton and Ashton-under Lyne attended. Images taken from the scene show charred brickwork above the bedroom window and the damage caused inside.
No further details have been revealed. The flat is above a bike shop - part of a parade of shops along the road. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and remained at the scene in the aftermath.
