Fears Dumfries and Galloway turbine tally could more than double

Anti-windfarm campaigners believe the number of turbines in Dumfries and Galloway could more than double in coming years.A study by the Save Our Hills group reveals there are more than 511 already up and running in the region.However, they fear that number could top 1,000 if all of the schemes in development are given the go ahead.Spokesman Iain Milligan said: “Dumfries and Galloway is at saturation point with onshore windfarms and people have had enough.“The prospect of significantly more turbines dominating the landscape is of real concern for people and businesses.“The scenery in this area is unique and should be left alone.”Save Our Hills’ research reveals there are currently 511 turbines in the region with another 324 being built and 232 in the planning process.With another 43 going through the scoping process, there is the potential for the figure to reach 1,090.Mr Milligan added: “This analysis shows developers are lining up to cover our surroundings with wind turbines.“We need to see action now from the local authority and Scottish Government ministers alike.“Dumfries and Galloway has already done more than its fair share towards net zero.“If further onshore windfarms are to be developed they should be in less sensitive areas.“Emphasis should shift to other forms of renewable energy which are more effective and don’t spoil the scenery.“If they are serious about the environment, protecting our landscape from the spread of turbines should be top of the list.”
