Ex pro boxer taking on Great Scottish Run in aid of Lanarkshire brain injury unit

A former professional boxer who nearly lost his life following a title bout is pounding the pavements in a bid to raise cash for the brain unit who helped to treat him.Gary Murray, 37, is taking on the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow to raise cash for the Murdostoun Brain Injury Unit, near Newmains, where he spent two weeks recovering from a bleed on the brain.

In 2017, Gary, from Coatbridge, was bidding to win the Celtic title from Belfast-based fighter Patrick Gallagher. However, the fight at Meadowbank in Edinburgh was stopped in the 10th round with Gary being given oxygen in the ring and then put into a medically-induced coma.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Speaking to Lanarkshire Live this week, Gary said: “I have no recollection of the fight at all. My family filled in the blanks for me. “My time at Murdostoun gave me a whole new perspective of life.“Boxing was my life and if I had won that fight there was a chance I could turn professional.“Ricky Burns (former three-weight world champion) came into see me but after that I knew I couldn’t box again.“However, I knew I had my family around me and I at least had a chance of a full recovery.“I was 30 at the time, I had a full-time job and I was engaged.
