EastEnders have revealed that their brand new set, which cost a staggering £87 million, needed to be built after the old one sparked safety concerns. The BBC soap’s Production Manager Rona McKendrick explained that the team were left with no choice but to revamp and create the new look Albert Square after the old lot was deemed “unsafe” in bad weather.
In a new interview with the Radio Times, Rona said: “The lot got shabbier and shabbier. Once the rain and the wind got in, it really started degrading.” “In recent years, it became unsafe in winds – you could see the chimneys wobbling.” Rona continued to say that on days when it was particularly windy, the team would have to measure the wind pressure and that “at a certain level, we had to evacuate the lot”.
