Work and Pensions Secretary has told MPs there are “substantial backlogs” of health benefit assessments which are going to take “some time to recover” during an accountability hearing with the Work and Pensions Committee.
Thérèse Coffey MP was initially asked by Steve McCabe MP on Wednesday during the session what proportion of people are having face-to-face assessments compared to those receiving paper-based or phone consultations.
Ms Coffey replied: “There are some benefits which can only be issued by a physical, face-to-face assessment. In particular, I think that’s the industrial injuries one, so I think we need to make sure that we prioritise where people are currently not receiving a benefit to which they may well be entitled in the.
