A drug driver who crashed next to rail tracks after leading cops on an 80mph chase has been condemned for “idiocy at the highest level”.

Craig Thomson fled officers in his Honda Civic with a 16-year-old relative in the passenger seat and was pursued across East Lothian into Edinburgh.

The teen girl suffered injuries including a fractured arm and leg in the smash after Thomson lost control.The 29-year-old crashed his car down an embankment before coming to a rest between live railway tracks.

Thomson appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday for sentencing after the case had been deferred for reports. But despite being slammed by Sheriff Douglas Keir for his “entirely irresponsible” actions, Thomson escaped a jail term.The sheriff put
