Town hall leaders are preparing for the ‘most dire financial position we have ever faced’ in light of the Covid-19 pandemic as they try to balance the books next year.
Among the £52m in initial savings options outlined are cutbacks worth £2.8m within its homelessness service, which have prompted outcry amongst charities and councillors.The proposals, which will undergo further consultation before approval, would lead to some homeless shelters closing completely and vital support being withdrawn for some of the city’s most vulnerable people.Demand has also risen sharply during the pandemic with the number of single people and families in temporary accommodation rising from 1,491 in March to 1,835 in September.A further £1.5m could be cut.
