Brit expats 'screwed over' by Brexit as retirement dreams shattered under new rules

Brexit as he faces being sent back to the UK after 20 years. At the end of March, all Brits living in Spain without residency were forced to leave as they were categorised as illegal immigrants.One of the conditions to obtain residency was an income of £21,000 a year – ruling out thousands of British pensioners.

Our sister title The Mirror reports how, while many organised residency before the rule change, others have been left with their futures in Spain at risk.

The Mirror spoke to two Brits, and a EU citizen married to one, who say Brexit has ruined their retirement plans.The 72-year-old pensioner, who asked to be anonymous, said despite living in Spain with his Russian partner and their children for two decades they face being separated.
