BBC Radio 1 to air censored version of Fairytale of New York this Christmas

BBC Radio 1 will air an edited version of the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York to avoid causing offence.The song, which was sang by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, has come under fire over the years for the use of derogatory terms for gender and sexuality.Bosses at the station have moved to replace ‘f****t’ to ‘haggard’, while the word ‘slut’ will be removed completely.The tweaks mean that the station will not be removing the festive song completely.BBC Radio 2 will continue to play the original version as it was recorded in 1987.

DJs on 6 Music will be allowed to choose between both versions.A spokesperson for the BBC said: “We know the song is considered a Christmas classic and we will continue to play it this year, with our radio.
