Andy Robertson and the Celtic legends who offered comfort in humble John Sludden's final days

Modest John Sludden was The Man With No Fame. Except in his native Falkirk. There, the local boy was always asked about his two goals at Wembley in Scotland schoolboys’ 5-4 win over England in 1980 in front of a live UK television audience of millions when he was 15.

But his son, Paul, 31, has revealed how the entire football world, from Anfield to East Stirlingshire – where John had managed - helped bring a brief moment of comfort to him in his final days before dying of cancer last May at the age of 56.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson, who was coached by Sludden during his two decades as a Celtic youth coach, was among the 50 people to send Paul video messages on WhatsApp with messages of support.
