Alarming images show ferocious heat in children's playground in Manchester as hot weather continues

Alarming images show the scorching temperatures in a Manchester children’s play park during the current heatwave. Captured on a thermal imaging camera, the photos show the temperature on a children’s slide reaching almost 72C or 161F in the sun.

The tarred paving under nearby swings reaches 56.6C or almost 134F. The images were captured by BBC Newsnight in Manchester on Monday, where temperatures hit highs of 36C or 96.8F in some boroughs.

Reporter Yasminara Khan used the camera, which is accurate to two degrees, to capture the build-up of heat during the day, including in a public playground.
