A9 Snow gates will stay closed overnight after several drivers trapped on motorway

The A9 Snow gates at Dunbeath and Helmsdale will remain closed to motorists overnight police have warned after several drivers found themselves stranded on the motorway today.

After an amber weather warning was put in place across the country the conditions on the road became treacherous with drivers warned not to travel.Earlier those trapped on the A9 were urged to stay in their vehicles until road conditions improved with no estimated time of when they could get out.Despite trying to clear the road throughout the afternoon Police Scotland has now confirmed the road will stay closed overnight in both directions and if emergency services need to travel they will be provided assistance.
