Traditional Marymass event axed due to covid-related illnesses

The annual Marymass flower show will not be returning to Irvine for this year's festival.This is the first Marymass festival in three years after covid put a stopper 2020 and 2021 events.And the annual Marymass flower show is one of the most anticipated events over Marymass weekend for green-fingered locals.But the Irvine Horticultural Society has confirmed there will be no show in Irvine this year due to covid-related illnesses and the disbandment of the ladies' flower club.Bill Anderson said: "The past few years have been pretty detrimental to those of us who organise events, especially for us who host the annual Marymass Flower Show."This year has also taken its toll due to a number of setbacks."Our committee has been depleted considerably and our ladies from the Flower Club who present such beautiful lunches, which entice visitors, have disbanded.

Covid and other illness have also taken their toll resulting in the secretary and treasurer struggling to fulfill their duties."We can only apologise to regular and new entrants but can assure you that, failing major disasters, we will be up and running again next year."We will still hold the annual Garden Competition this year and this is an open competition for residents in all areas of Irvine including Perceton and Dreghorn. Judging will take place on Monday, August 22. "Have a good growing season and we'll see you all next year."For those who would still like to show, here is a list of shows which are on in North Ayrshire.Kilwinning - Abbey Church Hall - Thursday, August 25 at 2pm onwards.
