mental health crisis, a police chief says.Police and crime commissioner Arfon Jones is calling for a 49-year ban on psilocybin – a key component of the class A drug – to be overturned.He believes it should be reclassified as “a potentially revolutionary medicine” that could save the NHS billions.The drug rose to prominence in the 60s, with musicians including The Beatles taking “trips” using the mushrooms, which give a hallucinogenic effect like LSD.It has been illegal to take the drug since 1971.Jones says a rethink on psilocybin would mean it could be used for clinical trials to help treat PTSD and depression.The north Wales police leader has written to MPs urging them to support his campaign, especially with the pandemic linked.
