Sign up to the MySalford newsletter and don't miss a thing happening in and around the city Once the main opposition party in the socialist stronghold of Salford, the Lib Dems have not had a single seat on the city council for nearly a decade now.

The local party peaked in 2008 with 10 councillors, but following the fateful formation of the coalition government two years later, it failed to win again.

Its former leader and founding member Norman Owen, who died in October, lost his seat in Claremont in 2012 – the last held by a Lib Dem – and, in the same year, he came fifth in the fight to be Salford's first directly-elected mayor.
