Strangeways prison is currently on lockdown amid claims inmates haven't been allowed to shower or exercise for several days.
The Manchester Evening News understands prisoners have been confined to their cells since Monday (6 June). Families have also been banned from visiting inmates at the Category A jail in Cheetham Hill until Friday (10 June).
Relatives say they've been informed by family members inside the prison that they haven't been allowed out of their cells for any reason and are having food brought to their door. The M.E.N has approached the Ministry of Justice for comment. One woman, whose 19-year-old son is currently an inmate at the jail said he told her that prisoner's mental health was starting to deteriorate and that the mood inside had become "very tense." Speaking to the M.E.N, she said: "My son rang me last night to say the prisoner's mental health is deteriorating quite quickly.
