Deadline hears the deal was near $5 million, and the plan is to release multiplatform including theatrical next summer.Pic stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson, and it was written and directed by New Zealand filmmaker Roseanne Liang.

As evinced already by its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, and the strong reactions it provoked—not to mention our caustic review—discussing and writing about the Midnight Madness movie “Shadow In The Cloud” can be a tricky and complicated affair. Directed by Chinese-New Zealand film director Roseanne Liang (2012’s “My Wedding and Other Secrets”) and starring Chloë Grace Moretz (“The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” “Suspiria”), “Shadow In The Cloud,” is a crazy, pulpy, genre-hopping B-movie about a female WWII pilot (Moretz) trying to warn her pig-headed, sexist male comrades of a sinister stowaway on board the aircraft while they battle Japanese airforces and compounding challenges.

“Shadow in the Cloud” takes place in a small hatch of an airplane during World War II, and star Chloe Grace Moretz says she had to overcome her claustrophobia to play the female pilot in Roseanne Liang’s film.“It was the first thing that I said to Roseanne,” Moretz told Beatrice Verhoeven in TheWrap’s virtual Toronto interview studio. “I said to her, ‘How small is this little ball going to be, because I am severely claustrophobic!’ We were lucky to have a couple panels be taken off, so we lost the front square and when we filmed from the side, we would lose the top of the side square.

Amid all the COVID-compromises and missed opportunities of this year's TIFF, one of the most unfortunate is that the fest's midnight-movie audience, always composed of more Regular Joe and Jane film-geeks than showbiz interlopers, won't be able to cram cheek-by-jowl into a theater and watch Roseanne Liang's Shadow in the Cloud. Any movie capable of making a sole viewer in his living room erupt in shocked laughter, or lean forward, mouth agape, for minutes of action, would shake the foundation of the poor Ryerson Theater, and Liang would get the fanboy ovation she deserves.
