Russian energy giant Gazprom to supply Salford’s schools, libraries and leisure centres

Salford council is set to award Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom a £1.8m contract to supply the city’s schools, libraries and leisure centres over the next two years.

The town hall’s procurement board identifies the company as having put forward the best case to supply gas to the council's buildings.

The report, going before tomorrow’s procurement board meeting, said the two-year deal offers ‘excellent value’ that would save the town hall £355,000 on its contract.

Although the council said it was trying to move towards green energy - last year it declared a 'climate emergency' - it argues that it's not possible to do so with its gas contracts.
