Private schools in Scotland set to lose lucrative tax break from next year

Private schools will lose a lucrative tax break next year after confirmation by the SNP/Green Government.The elite institutions will no longer qualify for rates relief after the pandemic caused a delay to the change being implemented.

Although private schools charge huge fees they are able to attract a range of tax benefits due to being classed as charities.

However, the 2017 Barclay Review noted that while state schools generally pay non-domestic business rates, private ones receive relief.

The report added: “This is unfair and that inequality should end by removing eligibility for charity relief from all independent schools.”Ministers accepted the recommendation and removal of the relief was supposed to come into effect more than a year
