Lawwell was strong in his defence of his work, citing big money spent used to boost the first team squad.He said: "We strengthened the squad in the summer we spent, as a club over the last 14 months, £35million.
We’ve strengthened and kept best our players - that’s not complacency." With key members of the squad who had brought nine titles in a row to Parkhead including Kieran Tierney, Dedryk Boyata, Mikael Lustig and Scott Sinclair leaving the club during the the period pointed to by Lawwell, the squad did need a boost.
