Amy Sedaris, Neil Flynn Join ‘Girls5Eva’ Season 2 (EXCLUSIVE)
Matt Donnelly Senior Film WriterThe breakout Peacock hit “Girls5Eva” is dialing up the funny for season 2, adding veteran comedy actors Amy Sedaris and Neil FlynnSitting down at Variety‘s SXSW Studio in Austin on Saturday, series creator Meredith Scardino revealed that the beloved Sedaris and Flynn will star as the parents of Busy Philipps’ character Summer Dutkowsky — one of the members of the titular girl group fighting for a comeback.Sedaris is best known for her iconic Comedy Central series “Strangers With Candy,” as well as dozens of memorable film and TV roles in work like “Broad City” and “Maid in Manhattan.” She was also Emmy nominee for her crafting series “At Home with Amy Sedaris.”Flynn co-lead the long-running ABC sitcom “The Middle,” for which he was Critics Choice Award-nominated. He was also a recurring mainstay on “Scrubs.” His film credits include playing Lindsay Lohan’s father in “Mean Girls,” “Major League,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia.” Scardino was joined in-studio by her lead cast Philipps, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, and Paula Pell.When we last saw the women of “Girls5Eva,” they’d rocked a local Jingle Ball concert with their eponymous hit, which Scardino said provides a glimmer of professional hope for the next batch of episodes.“The bet paid off, because somebody in the crowd noticed them and gave them a small record deal.  So, this season is about them making their first album on their own terms,” she said.The group also gave credit for the show’s alchemy to executive producer Tina Fey, who was invaluable in putting the cast together.

Emily Longeretta Nothing can stop Chita Rivera!That was the message of the evening at Monday’s Roundabout Theatre Company Gala, which carried the moniker, “Paint the Town.” The celebration, held at New York City’s famous Ziegfeld Ballroom, celebrated three-time Tony recipient Chita Rivera.Rivera, who starred in two major Broadway shows for Roundabout — 2003’s “Nine” and the 2013’s “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” — is best known for originating roles in “West Side Story,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Chicago” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”The night kicked off with a cocktail hour filled with theater stars, including Jane Lynch, Tony Shaloub, Richard Kind, Betsy Wolfe, Cherry Jones and many more, who mingled and couldn’t help but chat about how nice it was to be mask-free and able to hug one another again. Lynch, who is set to star in the upcoming production of “Funny Girl” opening next month, was greeted by both stars and execs alike, all eagerly confessing that they couldn’t wait to see the production.After one hour, everyone descended downstairs to the ballroom — a packed room of folks ready for Rivera’s honor, a full dinner, an auction and a performance by Sara Bareilles.Following opening remarks by Danny Burstein, artistic director and CEO of Roundabout Theater, Todd Haimes, took the stage and joked about the “rough two years” everyone has been through — especially when it comes to theater.With that, he passed the mic to a video message from Lin Manuel Miranda, who went on to introduce Helen Mirren.
