Novak Djokovic had a vaccine exemption to enter Australia after contracting Covid-19 last month, his lawyers said in a court filing on Saturday.
The tennis world number one was denied entry to Australia after landing in Melbourne this week to play in the Australian Open.
Djokovic, who is in immigration detention after having his visa cancelled on arrival on Thursday, returned his first positive coronavirus test on Dec 16.
His lawyers said that 14 days later he "had not had a fever or respiratory symptoms of Covid-19 in the last 72 hours.”The filing said on Jan 1, the Serbian sports star received a "a document from the Department of Home Affairs (which) told Mr Djokovic that his 'responses indicate(d) that (he met) the requirements for a quarantine-free arrival into Australia.”Djokovic, 34, an outspoken critic of mandatory vaccination, has never disclosed his own vaccination status.The tennis star is challenging his visa cancellation in Australia's federal court in hopes of winning his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open which starts on Jan 17.His case sparked massive public outcry in Australia and around the world.On Wednesday, Australian Border Force officials said the player had "failed to provide appropriate evidence" at Melbourne Airport because a prior infection was not a valid reason to enter without a vaccination.Prime Minister Scott Morrison later confirmed that this was the case under federal rules despite an endorsement by the Victorian state government.Australia's pandemic border rules ban foreigners from entering the country if they are not either double vaccinated or have a medical exemption from having the jabs.While foreigners can fly into Australia on a visa applied for online, they must still clear
