NHS Lothian has been fined after two patients died when they fell from a window at an Edinburgh hospital. The health board were handed the £220,000 penalty over safety breaches which led to the deaths of two vulnerable patients. Two men, aged 55 and 79, were being cared for at the Western General Hospital when the tragedies occurred.
On October 29, 2017, one of the patients, then aged 55, was in the care of the Neurosurgery Ward following an attempt to take his own life.
Whilst in the ward, he fell more than 11 metres to his death from a second-floor window. An investigation found the window in his room was not restricted to the required 100mm opening gap, reports Edinburgh Live. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said an investigation revealed a failure to ensure the patient was in a room with suitably restricted windows.
They also said the man had undergone surgery which can cause confusion, delirium and anxiety, putting him into a category of increased risk. The second patient, aged 79, was being cared for at the hospital's medical assessment unit on January 23, 2021.
