New Universal Credit rule change set to affect 746,000 people from end of month

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is introducing a change this month that will have an impact on hundreds of thousands of Universal Credit claimants.

There are more than four million self-employed people in the UK, with 746,000 relying on financial support from the DWP to top up their income.Universal Credit payments for the self-employed are based on what's called the Minimum Income Floor, a policy that was suspended during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the DWP has confirmed this will be restarting at the end of July. Under the Minimum Income Floor, a standard level of earnings is calculated for every self-employed person, based on the National Minimum Wage for their age group over a 35-hour week, this is then used to work out.
