Netflix Settles 'The Queens Gambit' Defamation Lawsuit

Netflix has settled the $5 million defamation lawsuit brought by chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili, although terms were not disclosed.

She sued Netflix in September 2021 for “false light invasion of privacy” and defamation after a line in the hit series The Queen’s Gambit falsely stated that she “never faced men” at the chessboard.

Nona Gaprindashvili is the fifth women’s world chess champion and the first female player ever to gain the “general” grandmaster title. The Queen’s Gambit has won two Golden Globes and eleven Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
