London’s Leicester Square. Lead actress Viola Davis beamed with pride for her latest project as she posed on the red carpet alongside co-stars Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, and more.
The Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed movie is set in the 1800s and tells the story of a group of all-female warriors who aim to protect the African kingdom of Dahomey with skills and fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen.
When faced with a new threat, Nanisca (Viola) must train the next generation of recruits to fight against a foreign enemy. The basic framework of the film is inspired by true events, but the plot is heavily fictionalised, as the female warrior group did actually exist, but the events in the film are largely dramatised.
Celebrating The Woman King’s release on October 4, Emmy-winning actress Viola was joined by her husband of 19 years, Julius Tennon.
