Teaching dance classes and mingling with fellow mums on the school run, Louise Elkes has worked hard to move on with her life.

One neighbour said of the Cheshire-born 43-year-old: “She’s lived here for years. Everyone knows her past but she’s just another mum to us.” But 25 years ago today marks the tragic death of eight-month-old Matthew Eappen, who was then in her care.

Following Matthew's death, and then known as Louise Woodward, the nanny would become known across the world as she was tried for his murder. Louise had been hired by doctors Sunil and Deborah Eappen to look after their baby boy in Boston, Massachusetts. A month later, in February 1997, she made a 911 call saying she had found the baby unresponsive and gasping for breath.
