A widow has spoken of the "devastating" impact the 2009 Post Office scandal had on her late husband – a sub-postmaster who was forced to plead guilty to false accounting, despite doing nothing wrong.
Marion Holmes' late husband Peter, who passed away in 2015, was in charge of the Jesmond Post Office in Newcastle when he was arrested over a 'missing' £46,000 due to the faulty Horizon computer system.
Peter, a former police officer, was offered a plea bargain when his case came to court in 2010.The Post Office said they would drop the theft charge if he would plead guilty to false accounting.
Marion told the Mirror that Peter, who was 69 years old at the time of the court case, "did not want to go inside" so he "jumped at the deal" but understandably that came at a cost - Peter was handed a three-month suspended jail sentence.
