A man has been jailed for trying to spit at a police officer after being arrested for using racist language towards a building society teller.

Bernard Erskine, 53, had been causing upset at a bank in the city centre to members of the public and staff when he used racially abusive slurs after becoming frustrated.

The man, who was said to be of no fixed abode, was arrested and taken into custody, wherein he spat towards a police officer, Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

Fortunately the officer managed to pull the plastic screen across to protect herself from being hit by the spittle. Erskine, who was subject to a suspended sentence for a different matter, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment and common assault of an emergency
