A new rule has come into place to help DVLA get through a backlog of driving licence applications. Until now, drivers who had health conditions had to have a questionnaire filled out by a doctor, but now this is being extended to a wider range of healthcare professionals.
The rule came into force yesterday, as was introduced to speed up the medical licensing process amid a backlog of applications.
In an amendment to the Road Traffic Act 1988, the medical questionnaire can now be carried out by medical professionals such as specialist nurses and opticians, which will also alleviate the workload for doctors.
The medical licensing process is a legal requirement to ensure drivers meet the medical standards for fitness to drive, reports Glasgow Live .
