Stockport’s Liam Broady’s pursuit of a place in the world’s top 100 received a setback after he went out in the quarter finals of the ATP Challenger Tour event in Bergamo, Italy on Friday.
Having beaten Serbia’s Danilo Petrovic and Ukrainian Ilya Marchenko in the first two rounds, Broady went out to Turkey’s Cem Ilkel 7-5 3-6 6-1.
Broady gained the first chance to draw blood by earning a break point in Ilkel’s second service game, but after that was denied, Broady himself saved four break points during a marathon fifth game, before Ilkel broke at the fifth time of asking.
Broady fought back from 40-0 down in the eighth game to draw level when Ilkel netted an aggressive service return from the 5th seeded left hander.
