Kin’s Yasmin Seky on going against her dad’s advice to focus on acting

Watching TV at 14 years of age, Yasmin Seky knew she wanted to be an actress, but thought it was an impossible dream – little did she know that less than a decade later, she would be gracing our screens in the gritty new RTÉ drama Kin. ‘I always loved acting and although I knew it was something I would like to do for a career, it didn’t seem possible that a young Dublin girl would be able to get anywhere on her own,’ she says. ‘Also, as my dad is Ghanian and has very traditional values, he was keen for me to find a good, steady job, so I didn’t really pursue things too much.’ So although she had some minor acting roles as a teenager, Yasmin – who is the eldest of four and grew up in Cabra on Dublin’s northside – put aside her ambition to
