Kate Garraway has emotionally confessed her embarrassment about falling into debt due to the cost of caring for her husband, Derek Draper.
The cost of his care was a whopping £16,000 per month, which was more than Kate earned from her job at ITV. It led to her building up significant debts before Derek passed away in January this year, after fighting the long-term effects of Covid, aged 56.An ITV documentary airing tonight - Kate Garraway: Derek's Story - features Derek discussing his struggles for the first time on camera.
He says: "I want you to hear my story" and "I want to be heard". On Tuesday's Good Morning Britain, Kate confessed that re-watching the documentary was painful, with scenes where Derek voices his distress over his predicament proving particularly tough, as reports the Mirror.
Additionally, she said she is "ashamed" of her debt. She went on: "I am ashamed of the fact that I am in debt."Not understanding, fellow host Richard Madeley asked why she felt this way.Kate explained: "Well because I have an incredible job that I love, that's very well paid."I'm not a carer, travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage.
