'It's a sad picture': 30% rise in burials this year, gravediggers' boss reveals

There has been a 30pc increase in burials by Salford council this year.A total of 270 burials were carried out by the council between January and October 2020, up from 208 over the same period in the previous year.There has also been an increase of approximately 25pc in the number of cremations carried out by Salford council this year, totalling 1,787 by October.The city council is responsible for the management and maintenance of four cemeteries in Salford – Agecroft, Peel Green, Swinton and Weaste – and there are also two crematoria – at Agecroft and Peel Green cemeteries.The figures were revealed this week by the bereavement services boss who praised his staff for coping with the increased demand during the pandemic.Dominic Clarke, head.
