Metrolink bosses may boost the number of 'deep cleans' on trams if the outbreak worsens as bus bosses hand out extra hand sanitiser to staff.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesman said there was a 'rigorous' cleaning regime in place on Metrolink, with trams cleaned nightly and litter collections taking place throughout the day.

Seats are shampooed once a year and a 'deep clean' takes place once every eight weeks - but this could be increased as the situation unfolds.

A spokesman added: "We are prepared to increase the frequency of deep cleans if required, as we continue to closely monitor this dynamic situation.” There are now nine known cases of coronavirus in Greater Manchester, it has been confirmed.
