Glasgow bar have been accused of using a racist slur over the use of the term ‘gypsy’ in its name. The Gypsy Taproom announced it would be opening at Barras Art and Design (BAaD) on July 17 - just two days after restrictions on indoor hospitality are due to be eased.

Social media promotion of the bar has sparked a furious response over the name chosen by the owners, particularly over the use of the term ‘gypsy’ - a word often used as a slur towards Roma people and travellers.

But the firm claim that the name lends itself to the ‘Gypsy Brewers’ who will be supplying craft beer to the bar. Gypsy brewers do not have facilities of their own and instead travel to a functioning brewer to produce their own beer.
