Frail gran's bed put into Lanarkshire hospital staff canteen to make way for emergency

An elderly woman with advanced vascular dementia was discovered by her horrified son “semi-naked” and "soaked in her own urine" in a bed in the staff canteen of a Lanarkshire acute hospital.Shocking footage taken yesterday morning by Shalabh Gupta shows his 76-year-old mother, Shakuntala Gupta, lying on a bed next to the open door of the University Hospital Hairmyres dining area, where staff go for their meals.

The room appears to also be used as a storage area for bins, boxes and furniture.When Mr Gupta challenged a nurse, he claims he was told the hospital had to make way for an emergency – and his mother had been the only patient to be moved to the dining area because she is in the UK illegally and is not entitled to free NHS care.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.
