Four flood alerts issued in Greater Manchester covering areas around the River Mersey and Irwell

Four flood 'alerts' have been issued in Greater Manchester. The Environment Agency said river levels were rising and would 'continue to rise throughout the evening and through the night'.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for the rest of Monday night into Tuesday morning, with an official Met Office weather warning for heavy rain in force.

The flood alerts concern land around the rivers Mersey and Irwell. Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston. The Environment Agency said: "We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around the River Mersey and Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks and their tributaries.
