The family and friends of a grandfather who tragically died after contracting coronavirus have paid tribute to him. Darrell Blakeley, of Middleton, tested positive for the disease after he was found collapsed at his home on Tuesday, March 3.

He was taken to North Manchester General Hospital where staff initially found he was suffering with sepsis and tested negative for the virus.

He tested positive for coronavirus a few days later. The 88-year-old died on Friday, March 13 while being treated in an isolation unit.

It is believed he contracted coronavirus after spending time with people who returned from a ski trip in Italy. Darrell attended St Michael’s Church, in Middleton, for 50 years and was an active choir member.
